Duke of Edinburgh's Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is recognised worldwide and therefore the gaining of an Award, especially at Gold level, is a huge achievement and one that greatly adds to any C.V. Employers recognise that commitment; team work; independent thinking and leadership skills have all been part of that Award and that is why it is rated so highly.

The Award has been in existence at Craigholme for nearly 40 years and continues to be popular and successful. All three levels are offered at Craigholme. Pupils embark on the Bronze Award at the start of S3. This session there are 32 participants. The Silver Award is offered to S4 pupils and the Gold Award is introduced in S5.

Skill; Service; Physical Recreation all form part of the Award. Craigholme participants choose to complete a variety of activities to gain the Award e.g. piano, choir, hockey and dance. The local community benefits from pupils completing their Service as some spend their time helping youth groups.

The Expedition section is at present run by Venture On, an AALA licensed company, who train and oversee this outdoor challenge. The Trossachs area is the usual venue for the Bronze and Silver Expeditions with Gold taking place in the Peebles area. Local volunteers assess these Expeditions.

Craigholme has always had an excellent record for Gold finishers who attend the Holyrood Palace Garden Party in July where they are presented with their Award. This year 9 pupils are undertaking their Gold Award which entails a 50 mile expedition.

NB: Former pupils have until the age of 25 to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Award. Please contact Mrs Fielding on 0141 427 0375 for further details.
