Libraries and Resource Centre

The Senior Library and Resource Centre is at the heart of the school and is used daily by Senior School pupils, Upper Junior School pupils and teaching staff. It is open from 9am to 5pm, allowing pupils unlimited access to computers, laptops, books and other learning resources. We have two Librarians who supervise the girls and assist them with their research.

We also have additional libraries and reading rooms; one in the Upper Junior School and another in the Lower Junior School. Our Librarians spend time with Junior pupils in these libraries to challenge and support their reading and information needs at these important early stages.

Information Literacy
Information Literacy is a key area of development at Craigholme, where girls must learn how to source the information they need quickly and ensure its accuracy.

Part of the role of our Librarians is to equip pupils with the skills and strategies which will enable them to find information, evaluate the reliability of a source, to avoid plagiarism and to manage and communicate information. This prepares pupils well for research projects in school and for further learning.

At Craigholme we do not leave Information Literacy to chance. Fully integrated into the curriculum, our Information Literacy Programme combines information literacy skill development with subject knowledge. The Librarian and Teacher team work together, sharing expertise and teaching approaches. The programme includes all year groups as skills progress and are reinforced: for example: note-taking techniques developed as part of an S1 Geography class becomes essential revision tools further up the school.

Buzz about Books
Our book groups are generating a 'Buzz about Books'!

S1 pupils have been reading and discussing the shortlist for the Scottish Children’s Book Awards.  Their reviews have been posted on the Scottish Book Trust website and much debate has taken place about which of the three books will get their vote!  They are also eagerly awaiting the results of the review competition!  We plan to read more books by the shortlisted authors; Teresa Flavin, Theresa Breslin and Nicola Morgan.

The J5 Book Group have the added fun of working with the S6 Librarians whose enthusiasm for books, craft and finger puppet stories written and performed by the J5s, provides a fantastic opportunity to generate a love of reading.
