Modern Languages is a vibrant and exciting department, where we work with pupils from Nursery to S6 to develop knowledge and understanding of a range of languages and cultures. We aim to equip each pupil with a sound knowledge of a second language, as well as a taste of a third and even a fourth. Learning is fun in the Modern Languages classroom — but our pupils also leave us with real skills they can apply and build upon in later life.
What we study in Modern Languages
French is taught to all pupils from pre-school to S2. In S1, Spanish is introduced and German is added to the portfolio in S2. This allows pupils to make an informed choice about the language/s they will continue with in S3 and beyond. We offer French, German and Spanish at Standard Grade and pupils select one or two languages to study in S3 and S4. In 2011, the pass rate for French, German and Spanish at Standard Grade was 100%.
In S5, pupils can study for a Higher or an Intermediate 2 qualification in French, German or Spanish. For those who wish to take their language learning further we also offer Advanced Higher courses in French, German and Spanish. S6 pupils have the additional option of learning Italian.
Beyond the classroom
We like to bring languages alive through a range of extra-curricular opportunities. These include a variety of trips ranging from foreign excursions to outings closer to home, such as trips to see European films at the cinema. This term we are travelling to Paris with S4 pupils to attend the Your Future in Europe conference. S2 pupils can take part in the European Cuisine Club, which is a joint venture with the Health and Food Technology Department.
