S6

Sixth form (S6) is an important school year for all our girls. This year is seen as a pivotal point in their school career, establishing a firm confidence in their academic and personal abilities.

S6 further enables pupils to meet the challenges they will face in the next stage of their education. S6 instils a sense of independence and encourages pupils to exercise self-discipline in their attitude to work and play, gaining time management and organisational skills. This is hugely beneficial in their preparation for further study and the demands of their future career.

Former pupils have commented that they really valued the experience, contrary to their initial expectations. It is a misconception that S6 is a wasted year. In addition to a wide range of Advanced Higher study options, increasing the choices available at University, the school has developed the S6 curriculum to include a busy calendar of guest speakers from different industries providing a deeper insight into the opportunities available beyond school. S6 also offers girls the opportunity to undertake a position of responsibility within the school and build on the success of our existing activities.

Enhanced Curriculum
Craigholme offers a range of additional short courses for S6 pupils. Many of these units are accredited by the SQA, and provide pupils with the opportunity to learn new skills and enhance their university application.

Courses are run subject to a minimum demand and past options have included: Forensic Chemistry, Fabric Design/Costume, Pottery, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, Media Studies, Theory of Knowledge, Statistics, Drama Health and Exercise.

Facilities

In the summer of 2008, the school invested in a new S6 Common Room. This bespoke space has a bright lounge area with wifi technology, as well as a kitchen and en-suite facilities. The space was designed and decorated by the class of 2009, and provides our pupils with a place to relax in between lessons.

S6 Perks
In addition, S6 at Craigholme offers a unique teambuilding weekend, organised and taken by the Senior Management Team, and a Leavers' Course. Such extra-curricular activities develop key life skills such as teamwork.

Financial Support
Students undertaking sixth year studies may be eligible to apply for an Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA). The EMA, funded by the Scottish Executive, is a weekly payment worth up to £30. Bonuses are also offered to students who make good progress with their studies. For more information on eligibility and an application form, please visit www.emascotland.com
