Business Studies

Business Studies develops pupils’ insight into today’s business world, as well as equipping them with the skills necessary to further their study of this subject. We encourage pupils to develop a spirit of enterprise, and challenge the girls to think, develop and communicate their ideas effectively and put them into practice.

What we study in Business Studies

Business Studies is an increasingly important and popular subject. Business and enterprise are at the heart of national growth and development. In S3 and S4, pupils presently study for their National 5 qualification. Pupils acquire knowledge and understanding of the impact of business activities on society and develop skills in enterprise and employability as well as decision making skills whilst learning to interpret and evaluate business financial information. 100% credit passes in Standard Grade for the past five years.

In S5/6, pupils work towards their Higher Business Management. Higher Business Management is a popular subject both with pupils progressing from National 5 as well as pupils studying it for the first time in S6. The pass rate has averaged 96% in the last three years.

Beyond the classroom

Pupils experience the real world of business through business trips and speakers coming into the school. Since the start of term 2013, S3 pupils have attended an Entrepreneur Conference where they were inspired by young successful entrepreneurs including Fraser Doherty of SuperJam and Gregor Lawson of Morphsuits. S3 have also had visits from Rachel Smillie from the social enterprise the Glad Café, and Colin Downie of Wild Hearts. S4 were visited by Aimee Doyle, Marketing Manager of Booth Welsh.  Donnie MacLean of EatBalanced gave a lunchtime talk about his new business venture of healthy pizzas.

This year, S3 are participating in Mico Tyco where they become social entrepreneurs for the month of November.

Pupils in S6 can also participate in Young Enterprise. This year’s group, Invidia, are producing ‘hearts’ and working on a book for young girls.
