Craigholme School Nursery has excellent links with Craigholme Junior. Not only are the buildings located adjacent to each other at 62 and 72 St Andrew’s Drive, teachers from Junior School make regular weekly visits to the nursery.
Specialist teachers in Music, Modern Languages and P.E. from our Senior School visit the Nursery every week. Our Head of Music invites the pre-school children to visit the Music Rooms in the main school where the children have the opportunity to try all the musical instruments and make a CD. Violin is also taught to Nursery children using the Suzuki method.
Mrs Mitchell, Junior 1 teacher and Mrs McColl, Additional Support Needs teacher, along with the nursery staff, ensure that the early level Curriculum for Excellence is followed. As a result the children learn by play and exploration through a planned programme of activities. Children are introduced to numerical concepts and pre-reading and writing skills at appropriate stages and are encouraged to work to their full potential. Working in partnership with parents, each child has a Personal Learning Plan which enables them to grow and develop at their own pace.
Nursery children benefit from the Junior 2 pupil Buddy System. This builds the confidence of the nursery children, gives them a welcome support structure and a taste of life at school.
Many children who attend Craigholme Nursery go onto enrol in Craigholme Junior School. The transition process from Nursery to Junior School starts the moment the child enters nursery. This ensures a seamless move from ante pre-school to pre-school, then onto to Junior 1.
Provision is made for children to spend longer in the nursery should their entry into school by deferred for any reason.
The nursery has close links with many Primary Schools in the area and invite all P1 teachers to visit the nursery prior to children joining a new school. All information and records are shared with receiving schools to ensure that children continue their education and cover all aspects of the early level.
