Around 200 pupils from 38 schools across Scotland competed in the Scottish Schools Equestrian Extravaganza at Ingliston Country Club on May 15.
Pupils travelled from Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Ayrshire to compete in the unique event, which incorporated classes designed to be inclusive for young people interested in equestrian events. Classes were formulated so that those without their own ponies can compete, either as a young handler or could hire a pony for the day from Ingliston’s stables.
The event involved Showjumping, Mini Eventing, Dressage and Showing classes in three age groups – Under 12, Under 15 , 16 and Over with a Team competition running throughout.
The event was organised by Ingliston Country Club in conjunction with Craigholme School. Craigholme School invited every Local Authority and Independent school in Scotland to participate.
Principal of Craigholme School, Mrs Gillian Stobo, said, “This is the first time that an equestrian event has been open to every school in Scotland. It was a fantastic opportunity for young people to represent their school in a sport that’s not on the curriculum.
The Senior Showjumping was won by Craigholme School after a tense jump off with other 5 teams. The Junior Showjumping was won by Houston Primary; Fettes College won the Style and Performance to Music; a pupil of Hamilton College won the Best Turned Out and Young Handler prize. Full results can be found on Ingliston’s website.
Rachel McArthur (J4) of Craigholme School won a competition to design a showjumping fence. Her prize was presented to her by Mrs Stobo in the showjumping arena.
As well as teaching valuable skills such as responsibility and team work, the equestrian event is also cross-curricular. Pupils who undertook their dressage test to music, looked to the school’s music department for inspiration.
Craigholme’s Science Technician, Mrs Penny Clifford, who was fully involved in the organisation of this event along with Ingliston’s staff is a very experienced rider, show judge, trainer and event organiser. Her accolades include judging top class competitions at shows such as Royal Windsor and Royal International at Hickstead. In addition, she produces and traines ponies and 2009 was the thirtieth time one of her ponies qualified for the Horse of the Year Show.
