Pupil wins Rotary Debating Competition

S3 pupil Jennifer Smylie won the Junior Trophy and four other pupils reached the final of the Glasgow Rotary Public Speaking Competition at Glasgow Caledonian University last week.

Jennifer, who also won the award last year, wrote and delivered a speech entitled the Organic Question, which she chose from a choice of three titles.

Jennifer, who has also had success in annual speaking competitions held in Craigholme said, “I really enjoy public speaking and am delighted to have won the trophy 2 years in a row.”

Jessica Cohen, Rebeeca Clow (S6), Kirstie Hardie and Zaema Majeed (S2) all spoke competently to reach the final rounds of the competition which involved 80 competitors. This is the 26th anniversary of the Glasgow Rotary Public Speaking Competition. Throughout its history Craigholme pupils have a strong track record of reaching the final round and winning the competition on numerous occasions.

In the Glasgow Speakers Club competition Lucy Symon (S6) came third with her speech about the Freedom of Speech. The final round took place in Glasgow City Council’s debating chambers.

Lucy said, “It was quite a scary room to speak in. It was the most challenging debating competition that I have competed in because the speeches had to last eight minutes.”
